Chess pattern on kitchen floor

Kategori: Allmänt

This pattern I painted on a kitchen floor in Äppelviken, Bromma in Stockholm in 2012. The client where very convinced that she wanted this pattern. But she couldn´t get it in the right colors from the carpet industry. And then they contacted me. We had a chat about it and then we agreed that they should contact a carpenter to put in a little bit cheaper fur wood floor. Because the client really liked the "Shabby chic" look, and because of the underfloor heating there will be a beautiful movement on the floor which will help the patina and give it a really old look. I started by schellack all the twigs, to prevent the bleeding of resin. Then I basecoated the whole floor with a hard drying interior floor paint (waterbased). and offcourse to minimize the work i already had tinted the basecoat paint in the right color. When it was dry, i gave it a good sanding, then i repeated this steps in four layers to giva it a really strong surface. Then the meassure starts. I did a template in the right size for the cubes and then i started on a straight line in the kitchen. Because it´s an old house there are no straight walls, which in this case really helped the old look! After I had transfered the pattern there where time to start the masking job. and all of the cubes had to be masked of by themself, No straight lines all over the floor, then there should be a gap between the cubes, and that´s not the look we wanted . When the masking where in place I started to burnish, and paint the edge of the masking tape whit the basecoat to prevent bleeding. Now its time for the darker grey, and of course I still keep sanding in between layers, even though the surface is smooth as it is. When all the layers are dry and the masking is gently removed, I put an Eggshell varnish on the floor in 3 very thick layers to give it an even stronger surface, because there is children in the house. In the finished picture the varnish is still wet, that is why you can´t see the Eggshell finish. Remember to always wear clean pants when you´re painting floor.
